Essential waste services continue

The City of Vincent’s kerbside bin collections are continuing as normal as part of the essential services being delivered during the COVID-19 pandemic.

General waste and recycling collections remain a priority and will continue, along with the green waste verge collection that is currently underway.

Bulk verge collections

Bulk hard waste collection has been postponed after the City’s collection contractor raised concerns over the handling of potentially contaminated items, as well as their ability to finish the job if employees had to self-isolate. Collections were due to begin on April 20 but are being postponed until further notice.

For those who want to get rid of mattresses or white goods in the interim, the City is still offering on-demand collections for these items throughout the year.

More information on the services and the cost can be found from www.vincent.wa.gov.au/residents/waste-recycling/on-demand-waste-collection.aspx

Community members could also consider taking their waste to Balcatta Recycling Centre or Tamala Park Waste Disposal Facility. Charges may apply and it is recommended residents contact the centres in advance as services may be subject to change.

“We know how much our community values bulk hard waste collection and with many residents at home it is a good time for a clean up. But we are having to make adjustments as we deal with the impact of COVID-19,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“Our contractor has valid safety concerns and if members of their small team end up self-isolating we could be in a situation where we have rubbish sitting out on our streets for an indefinite period. We know that is a risk our community wouldn’t want us to take.

“We will return this service as soon as it is safe and practical to do so.

“It is really important that people do not put their waste on the verge in coming weeks. It will not be picked up as we all want our streets to be clear during this time.”

FOGO

The City had planned on introducing Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bins across Vincent from October.

But at a special meeting earlier this week, Council voted to defer the introduction of the three-bin system until October 2021 to allow the City to focus on managing the impact of COVID-19.

“This was a tough decision as we have done a lot of work behind the scenes and we know our community has been looking forward to reducing our waste to landfill through the three-bin system,” said Mayor Cole.

“The major roll-out of the three-bin system needs to happen at a time when we can guarantee FOGO can be processed, can deliver of bins and bench top caddies to households and undertake proper community engagement and education. This is our biggest change at the doorstep in recent years and we want to do it well.”

“Unfortunately we now find ourselves in uncharted territory with the spread of COVID-19. This decision will allow us to focus attention and resources on COVID-19 relief and recovery.
