A mural that depicts one of the most famous images of the 20th century was painted in Vincent today to inspire the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Artist Gareth Price, who works under the name Scroller, painted a piece of art titled ‘Prevails’ on the wall of Mount Hawthorn coffee shop Fields of Vincent.

Scroller contacted the City of Vincent and offered to paint a COVID-19 inspired mural in a bid to do something positive in a time of great uncertainty and worry.

The City connected him with the owners of Fields of Vincent, who were more than happy to have a piece of art painted onto their wall on a busy stretch of Scarborough Beach Road.

Prevails depicts the iconic photograph ‘V-J Day in Times Square’, which captured the moment a sailor kissed a nurse in New York City to celebrate the end of WWII.

The subjects in the mural are wearing face masks and gloves and Scroller hopes the artwork will send a message out to the community to be safe, be kind and prevail during the pandemic.

“We really appreciate this amazing offer from Scroller to paint his Prevail artwork here in Mount Hawthorn to inspire our community during these uncertain times,” said City of Vincent Mayor Emma Cole.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is a once in a lifetime event and it will now be captured in Vincent through this artwork for years to come.

“This mural will remind us that is it more important than ever to take care of each other, stay safe and look forward to the day when we can hug each other once again.”
