Unite for National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week will be recognised a little differently this year, but there are still plenty of opportunities to connect online and show we are all ‘In this together’.

The City of Vincent is inviting community members to come together virtually over the next week to acknowledge the nation’s reconciliation journey during this time of physical distancing.

Themed ‘In this together’, National Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May to 3 June. It is a time for all Australians to think about how they can contribute to achieving reconciliation.

The City of Vincent Facebook page will feature a number of videos to celebrate National Reconciliation Week and encourage people to join the conversation online.

The videos will highlight nine registered Aboriginal sites within Vincent and will include a Welcome to Country by Elder Uncle Noel Nannup and a performance by musician Dan Riches.

Foodie Marissa Verma will host a six seasons cooking video and Reconciliation WA co-chair Carol Innes will host a Zoom question and answer session on Friday at 1pm.

North Perth Common and the Beaufort Street sign will light up in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander colours from today.

“National Reconciliation Week is taking on a virtual form this year because of COVID-19 restrictions, but we continue to celebrate reconciliation with our community online and with the same commitment and passion,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“This year, all around Australia people will be encouraged to start National Reconciliation Week by acknowledging Country through social media.

“Whilst we can’t all be physically together to celebrate reconciliation, I encourage you to reflect on reconciliation this week and what it means to you and to Australia, and to join with us at the City of Vincent as we traverse music, six seasons cooking and beautiful video content of significant Aboriginals sites in and around Vincent.

“This year’s theme ‘In this together’ recognises that we all have a part to play when it comes to reconciliation.

“Together we can build one community and walk the path of reconciliation together.”

Three councillors and seven community members were appointed as the City’s representatives on the Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group last month.

The City welcomes community members Roslyn Harley, Gordon Cole, Ian Hale, Jodey Brockhurst, Marilyn Lyford, Maxine Brahim and Mikayla King to the group. We also welcome councillors Dan Loden, Jonathan Hallett and Joshua Topelberg.

This group will help guide the City as we continue to implement a range of actions under our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan.

In 2020, Reconciliation Australia is celebrating 20 years of shaping Australia’s journey towards a more just, equitable and reconciled nation.

This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the Walk for Reconciliation, which saw hundreds of thousands of people walk across the nation’s bridges to call for unity and reconciliation.

National Reconciliation Week runs on the same dates each year - 27 May to 3 June.

The dates commemorate two milestones in the reconciliation journey – the 1967 Referendum acknowledging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the High Court Mabo decision.
