Vincent vollies here to help

The City of Vincent is connecting volunteers with community members in need to ensure our most at-risk residents are taken care of during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Community members who want to help their neighbours during these challenging times can now register online for the Vincent Community Support Network.

Volunteers can put their hands up to help their fellow residents with anything from grocery shopping to collecting medication, cooking or dog walking.

They can even offer to do something as simple as call a vulnerable person to ‘check-in’.

Volunteers and those who are in need of help will be matched up through the support network to ensure people who are at a greater risk of being impacted by COVID-19 are looked after.

People who want to help their neighbours can also register through the City of Vincent website with Volunteering WA and help charities that are already providing valuable services in the Vincent community.

“We don’t want to replicate existing services or divert support away from charitable organisations that are already doing such an amazing job,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“Instead, this support network will act as a safety net to ensure anyone who is needs some extra support is looked after, even if it is about maintaining connection and having a friendly check-in.

“We have already had many enquiries from residents about how they can help their neighbours during the pandemic, so this gives community members an avenue to volunteer and support others.

“We want to do everything we can to ensure people remain connected and supported during COVID-19 – from our seniors and people who are immune-compromised to those who may experience isolation for the first time.

“There may be very independent people in our community who need support if they become ill or go into quarantine. In Vincent, we do have a higher than average single person households with 31 per cent living alone. So this initiative is designed to be responsive to a variety of needs within our community.

“I’ve been really heartened – but not surprised – by the way our community members have already been looking after each other during this challenging time.”

Help for those in need is being provided by Foodbank and Manna Inc and through community programs such as Adopt a Healthcare Worker and John Carey MLA’s Perth Electorate Seniors Assistance.

Vincent residents can also access help through our Meals on Wheels program.
