With the COVID-19 public health pandemic currently active in Australia, it’s even more important for everyone to get their influenza (flu) vaccination this year. Vaccination is the best protection against the flu.

There is no vaccine for COVID-19, but there is one for influenza. The WA Department of Health encourages everyone to get the flu vaccine this year and avoid unnecessary burden on our health system and hospitals.

What is the flu?

It's a common virus which is highly contagious and causes symptoms similar to the common cold but they are not the same thing.

Typical symptoms include:

  • sudden onset of fever
  • headache
  • sore throat
  • runny nose
  • cough
  • fatigue (tiredness)
  • general aches and pains
  • nose, throat and lung congestion.

When is the best time to get the flu vaccine?

Timing of vaccination should aim to achieve the highest level of protection during peak influenza season. This usually occurs from June to September in most parts of Australia. Vaccinating from April provides protection before the peak season.

Is the flu vaccine free?

The flu vaccine is free for:

  • persons 65 years or older
  • children 6 months to less than 5 years
  • primary school-aged children (from 5 years to students in year 6)
  • pregnant women (any trimester)
  • Aboriginal people 6 months and older
  • individuals 6 months and older with medical conditions that place them at risk for complications of influenza, including:
    • cardiac disease
    • chronic respiratory conditions
    • chronic neurological conditions
    • impaired immunity
    • diabetes and other metabolic disorders
    • renal disease
    • haematological disorders
    • children aged 6 months to 10 years receiving long-term aspirin therapy.
